After having defined the KARO logic for specifying intelligent agents in earlier work we now turn to the question how to realise agents specified in the KARO framework. To this end we look at agent programming languages that we have defined, and investigate how programs in these languages can be linked to the KARO logic.

The past 50 years have seen an accumulation of evidence suggesting that associative learning depends on high-level cognitive processes that give rise to propositional knowledge. Yet, many learning theorists maintain a belief in a learning mechanism in which links between mental representations are formed automatically. We characterize and highlight the differences between the propositional and link approaches, and review the relevant empirical evidence. We conclude that learning is the consequence of propositional reasoning processes that cooperate with the unconscious processes involved (...) in memory retrieval and perception. We argue that this new conceptual framework allows many of the important recent advances in associative learning research to be retained, but recast in a model that provides a firmer foundation for both immediate application and future research. We present the system SUBSEXPL used for simulating and comparing explicit substitutions calculi. The system allows the manipulation of expressions of the λ-calculus and of three different styles of explicit substitutions: the λσ, the λse and the suspension calculus. A variation of the suspension calculus, which allows for combination of steps of β-contraction is included too. Implementations of the η-reduction are provided for each style. Other explicit substitutions calculi can be easily incorporated into the system due to its modular structure. (...) The uses of the system include: the visualization of the contractions of the λ-calculus in de Bruijn notation, and of guided one-step reductions as well as normalization via each of the associated substitution calculi. Many useful facilities are included: reductions can be easily recorded as text files, LATEX outputs can be generated and several examples for dealing with arithmetic operations and computational operators such as conditionals and repetitions in the λ-calculus are available. The system can be executed over Emacs using the x-symbol mode in such a way that λ-terms and terms of the explicit substitutions calculi are represented in its natural syntax avoiding the necessity of repeatedly generating LATEX outputs. The system has been of great help for systematically comparing explicit substitutions calculi, as well as for understanding properties of explicit substitutions such as the Preservation of Strong Normalization. In addition, it has been used for teaching basic properties of the λ-calculus such as: computational adequacy, the usefulness of de Bruijn's notation and of making explicit substitutions in real implementations. When the COVID-19 surge hit New York City hospitals, the Division of Medical Ethics at Weill Cornell Medical College, and our affiliated ethics consultation services, faced waves of ethical issues sweeping forward with intensity and urgency. In this article, we describe our experience over an eight-week period (16 March through 10 May 2020), and describe three types of services: clinical ethics consultation (CEC); service practice communications/interventions (SPCI); and organizational ethics advisement (OEA). We tell this narrative through the prism of time, (...) describing the evolution of ethical issues and trends as the pandemic unfolded. We delineate three phases: anticipation and preparation, crisis management, and reflection and adjustment. The first phase focused predominantly on ways to address impending resource shortages and to plan for remote ethics consultation, and CECs focused on code status discussions with surrogates. The second phase was characterized by the dramatic convergence of a rapid increase in the number of critically ill patients, a growing scarcity of resources, and the reassignment/ redeployment of staff outside their specialty areas. The third phase was characterized by the recognition that while the worst of the crisis was waning, its medium- and long-term consequences continued to pose immense challenges. We note that there were times during the crisis that serving in the role of clinical ethics consultant created a sense of dis-ease as novel as the coronavirus itself. In retrospect we learned that our activities far exceeded the familiar terrain of clinical ethics consultation and extended into other spheres of organizational life in novel ways that were unanticipated before this pandemic. To that end, we defined and categorized a middle level of ethics consultation, which we have termed service practice communication intervention (SPCI). This is an underappreciated dimension of the work that ethics consult services are capable of in times of crisis. We believe that the pandemic has revealed the many enduring ways that ethics consultation services can more robustly contribute to the ethical life of their institutions moving forward. (shrink)

Geannoteerde briefwisseling van de twee geleerden over het vraagstuk van de evolutie.

In this response, we provide further clarification of the propositional approach to human associative learning. We explain why the empirical evidence favors the propositional approach over a dual-system approach and how the propositional approach is compatible with evolution and neuroscience. Finally, we point out aspects of the propositional approach that need further development and challenge proponents of dual-system models to specify the systems more clearly so that these models can be tested.

In prevention and health promotion interventions, screening methods and risk profile assessments are often used as tools for establishing the interventions’ effectiveness, for the selection and determination of the health status of participants. The role these instruments fulfil in the creation of effectiveness and the effects these instruments have themselves remain unexplored. In this paper, we have analysed the role screening methods and risk profile assessments fulfil as part of prevention and health promotion programmes in the selection, enrolment and participation (...) of participants. Our analysis showed, that screening methods and health risk assessments create effects as they objectify health risks and/or the health status of individuals, i.e., they select the individuals ‘at risk’ and indicate the lifestyle modifications these people are required to make in order to improve their health. Yet, these instruments also reduce the group of participants thereby decreasing the possible effect of interventions, as they provide the legitimisation for people to make choices to whether they enrol or not and what lifestyle changes they incorporate into their lives. In other words, they present a space of interaction, in which agency is distributed across the practice nurses, the participants and the instruments. Decisions were not just made upon the projection of the outcomes of these instruments; decisions that were made by both the patients and practice nurses were the resultant of their opinions on these outcomes that were formed in interaction with the instruments. In der holländischen Umgangssprache hat das Wort « Humor » eine wenig bestimmte Bedeutung. Es schliesst das Komische und allen Arten von Witz und Schertz ein. Diese Vieldeutigkeit ist zum Teile begründet in dem schillernden Charakter des humoristischen Phänomens. In der jetzigen Untersuchung befragen wir den Humor auf seinen wesentlichen Gehalt. Solche Analyse des Humors soll sich nicht von vornherein zu einem ästhetischen, psychologischen, ethischen oder soziologischen Ausgangspunkt entschliessen ; wir versuchen den Humor phänomenologisch gegen ihn verwandte Erscheinungen abzugrenzen. Zunächst (...) befragen wir den « Geist » des geistreichen Witzes. Dieser Geist, von den Französen Esprit genannt, ist der « Geist des Komischen », in dem Sinne, dass in ihm einer der Wesenszüge des Komischen seine letzte Vervollkommnung findet. Der geistreiche Witz ist ein intellektualistisch kühles Spiel mit Wert und Gegenwert ; er enthüllt plötzlich und ohne Mitgefühl ein Paradoxen. In dem Hinweis auf das Absurde liegt seine Affinität zum Humor. Der Humor ist aber weniger nüchtern, nicht so zugespitzt, sondern gemütlicher und freundlicher. Der Esprit führt nicht zum herzlichen Lachen, weil er das Gemüt nicht berührt. Eine Analyse des Lachens zeigt uns dieses Phänomen als eine Krise des Verhaltens . Lachen ist die Kapitulation einer Person vor der Unmöglichkeit eines Kontrastes, das dem Verhalten keinen Halt bietet. Im Lachen verlieren wir unsere Haltung und Selbstbeherrschung. Gerade diese Explosivität des Lachens ist es, die dem Humor abgeht. Der Lacher macht sich keine Sorge um den Wert, den er verlacht ; er lacht schlechtweg, weil der Kontrast zwischen der Erscheinung und ihrer Norm ihn dazu veranlasst. Der lachende Mensch sieht nicht, dass der lächerliche Kontrast in einer tieferen Diskrepanz begründet ist : in der Diskrepanz zwischen dem realen Sein und der idealen Norm des Menschen. Es ist vor allem der tragische Blick, der diese fundamentale Diskrepanz entdeckt. Der tragische Mensch geht eben an diesem Wissen zugrunde. Seine Auseinandersetzung mit der Welt und mit sich selbst entfaltet sich in der Verstimmung, in der Einsamkeit und Trostlosigkeit. Es gelingt dem tragischen Menschen nicht, sich im Lachen von der Zerrissenheit der Existenz zu distanzieren. Das Lachen bietet dem Lachenden die Möglichkeit, Abstand zum Kontrast zu gewinnen. Es kann daher als Zugang zum Humor fungieren, der die Diskrepanz erkennt, sie aber im Gegensatz zum Tragischen, heiter relativiert. Der Humor spricht vom Absurden ohne Feindseligkeit oder Trauer, aber auch ohne Ausgelassenheit. Er hüllt sich jedoch nicht in der Indifferenz. Der Humor findet sich in einer gehobenen Stimmung beheimatet, und er verhält sich sympathisch zum Mitmenschen und zur Existenz. Sein Zeichen ist daher das Lächeln, diese Mim ik des Geistes , eine harmlose Gebärde, die eine Suspension der inneren Haltung wie der äusseren Aktivität verrät. Der humoristisch gestimmte Mensch enthält sich von jeder Stellungnahme ; mit Vergnügen zeigt er auf die Widersinnigkeit des Lebens hin, ohne sich mit dieser auseinanderzusetzen. Er verweigert sich, den andern Menschen bei seiner schwachen Stelle zu nehmen. Der Humor beabsichtigt also keinen Zweck. Er blüht auf wie ein Geschenk des zufriedenen Zumuteseins. Er zeigt den Menschen im Spiel mit seinem eigenen paradoxalen Dasein. Seiner Neutralität wegen, und der darin implizierten Ambiguität, ist Humor so schwierig zu fassen. Der für den Humor unzugängliche Zuhörer ist ja immer dazu geneigt, ihn aus einer bestimmten Haltung zu deuten, und sucht also im Humor Urteil oder Angriff, Mitleid oder Schertz. Der Humor setzt sich nicht mit den stellungnehmenden Anderen auseinander, er ist nicht in der Alltäglichkeit der Auseinandersetzung und des Gespräches zu Hause, sondern fordert den Mitmenschen auf zu einem gemeinsamen Blick auf den Kontrast, seine Tiefe und seine Relativität. Gerade deshalb fassen der religiöse und der tragische Mensch ihn als einen leichtsinnigen Schertz auf, der sich dem Ernste des Lebens entzieht. Sie haben dann eben nicht verstanden, dass das Wesen des Humors in seiner Feinheit und Zartheit liegt. Diese Feinheit ist die Feinheit einer Grenze. Es ist das Wesen des Humors, sich auf der Grenze zwischen dem Komischen und dem Tragischen zu befinden. Der Humor weder lacht noch weint, er lächelt froh über die Paradoxalität des Daseins. Darum ist er auch ungenügsam als dauernde Lebenshaltung. (shrink)

Dans toutes les sciences, même en physique, la réflexion sur les expériences, les concepts et les explications oblige à repenser l'opposition de la nature et de l'esprit. C'est en raison de cela que la psychologie s'est vue contrainte de revoir la conception traditionelle concernant la relation de l'âme et du corps. Le corps est un système d'équilibres intérieurs qui ont une signification et qui, dans le courant de l'existence sont formés, entretenus, troublés et rétablis. En tout cela motivations psychologiques et (...) occasions corporelles sont intimement mêlées. Ceci est illustré par deux exemples, la conservation de la constance de la température du corps et de l'état de nutrition. La stabilité du « milieu interne » , C. à. d. l'homéostase, est la condition de l'indépendance individuelle de l'animal, et elle est le point d'appui de la liberté personnelle de l'homme. La régulation thermique est le fait de fonctions physiologiques qui s'exercent en accord avec l'existence personnelle. Cette liaison de l'existence et de la vie s'explique par le fait que, corporellement, l'homme ne réagit pas à des excitants physiques, mais à leur signification humaine. La régulation thermique dépend de la sensation de froid et de chaud et par conséquent aussi de relations et d'habitudes humaines. Le second exemple, de l'homéostase, de la conservation d'un état constant de nutrition, démontre, tout comme la régulation thermique, l'unité d'un état physiologique et du corps comme situation vécue. Ceci nous est montré par l'exemple de l'appétit qui dépend sans dute de sensations corporelles et d'équilibres intérieurs, mais tout autant des relations affectives. Le manque d'appétit, l'anorexie nerveuse, comme on l'appelle, se produit souvent d'une manière symptomatique dans les périodes critiques de l'existence, p. ex. à la puberté, au climacterium et à l'occasion de conflits psychiques. Il y a alors une disproportion entre le vouloir et le pouvoir que le psychologue ne peut comprendre que par rapport à la corporéité animée et animante, c'est à dire par le fait que la corporéité déjà organisée entre en conflit avec la corporéité organisante qui est constituée et par la motivation de la situation et par la liberté relative de l'homme qui donne à cette situation un sens déterminé. L'existence et la vie sont deux aspects de la réalité humaine, aspects qui sont susceptibles d'être analysés et auxquels le psychologue doit accorder son attention. La personne concrète est une unité de nécessité et de liberté, de nature et d'esprit, qui se forme elle-même dans sa vivante existence. (shrink)
